Type of Plant? Problem? Solution?

This is a tree in my office that belongs to my boss. I have been taking care of it now for the last 11 years. My boss received it at his dad's funeral... now I am killing it!!!! I know part of the problem... he was keeping all the leaves that fell off.. on the top of the soil.. I water it about every 3 weeks.. well.. this last time.. i decided to take all the leaves off the topsoil and there was standing water!!!! (i hadnt watered yet). We dumped it all out.. I took the plant home and repotted it.. and it hasnt bounced back and I am afraid it isnt going to. I have only watered it a tad since i repotted. Oh dear. Sounds as if it was drowning. Do hope it recovers.
I believe it is a Schefflera. Probably Schefflera arboricola. Masses of advice on www about how to take care of it.
