I am growing this plant in a bonsai pot. I thought it was a type of ficus, until I found the thorns.

Hi Smallfry,
Could it be an orange tree?

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
I am leading toward the Natal plum.
Check out this site.

Looks like a good possibility.* Do you see creamy white sap when you prune?

Newt,
I did see white sap when I pruned. Does the plum do that?

I noticed that the Natal plum has a double thorn on the thorn stem. The orange looks like it has a single thorn.

Yes, they do. Be sure to read about the poisonious parts.
