does anyone know whether moss (plain old moss that comes up everywhere) will kill the perennials or shrubs? I don`t mind the moss as long as there is no problem for other plants. thank you

It's not so much the moss that will effect your plants, but the conditions that moss tends to grow in. Moss likes acid soil that is compacted and moist. If your plants like those conditions, then the moss shouldn't effect them. Most plants prefer a pH from neutral to slightly acid.
thank you for your response....I just figured moss would help hold the water also for the plants. I just didn`t want the moss to take over. Lime will get rid of moss , right?
I'm not sure how you mean, "Lime will get rid of moss , right?" If you just sprinkle it on the moss I don't think that will be very effective. It would be best to remove the moss, cultivate the soil while adding compost and lime, try and get more sunlight to the area by thinning shrubs and/or trees and that should help keep the moss away.
Maybe a picture and a full explanation of what you are trying to accomplish would be helpful.
