I ordered some fruit trees from a discount online company (Autumn Ridge) a few years ago and now I have my doubts that I have the type of trees that I wanted.  I am supposed to have a Keiffer Pear and a Moonglow Pear.  They seem to be growing well but they both have thorns on them.  Does anyone know if they should have thorns?  I've read some really bad things about Autumn Ridge since I planted these and it sounds like they are a really suspect company.

Thanks.:)

Hi Razorback,

Immature pears do have thorns, but lose them as they mature.  I suspect your pears aren't grafted trees as most are sold grafted with tops that have matured past the thorn stage.

Here's a similar question I answered on a UK arborists forum 2 years ago.

The problem is often that any fruit from a tree that isn't grafted could be anything and the fruits are often inedible.  Do a google with:
pear + thorns and you'll get some interesting info.
