Deer Proof Bulbs

Why give up on planting bulbs just because you share your yard with hungry deer? There’s nothing as uplifting as looking at a dazzling display of flowers in spring. And even if you live in a place where browsing deer are as common as dogs and cats you can still enjoy a breathtaking display of spring bulbs without investing in an eight foot high electrified fence… as long as you plant the right ones.

If your yard is unfenced, you’re going to have to give up your dream of masses of brilliant tulips unless you’re prepared for heartache. Focus instead on planting daffodils, hyacinths, anemones and fritillaries. These are all great spring flowering bulbs that will produce colorful, cheerful blooms and better yet, deer don’t like them.

Deer deterrents

Although nothing makes a tulip absolutely deer proof, there are some home remedies that work for some people. Most commonly used is Predator’s Urine, like wolf or coyote. The scent of these products will scare most deer away. Also the use of very fragrant soap or even spreading human hair around the flowers has been helpful in the past. You can also try to ruin the great taste of the flowers by spraying them with cayenne pepper, store bought pepper spray or make your own by mixing water cayenne pepper and hot sauce. Remember though that deer are smart and hungry and nothing short of a 9 foot high fence (preferably electric) will keep yummy treats like tulips out of their reach.
