Lavender care

I aquired two beautiful lavendar plants at my new home. The first year they were too overgrown for the area they were in, so I pruned them. Now they are growing strangely - a lot of dead branches here & there with some new growth ... my question is, how do I prune them? Are ther any good web sites that could help me? Thank You
