help for mint

hi there. i am completely a novice gardener! i have a mint plant that i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong with. all of the leave towards the bottom of the stem are turning yellow and falling off. am i just not watering it enough? it was a gift from a teacher of mine and i was instructed to water it only a couple of times a week. apparently she propagated it from one of her mint plants about two months ago. this is actually the third time i've tried growing mint plants and the same thing always happens. i live in a small apartment with no yard but the plant is in the window, which gets sun most of the day. any help would be appreciated! thanks!
