Hostas in winter?

I've purchased some hosta roots. Can I start them indoor in pots and keep them through the winter? I figured that way they would have more months to grow instead of going dormant outside in the winter. I will then transplant them outside next spring. Please tell me if this is a good way to do it. Thank you.
