Hostas are one of those plants that can actually be divided successfully any time of the year, but dividing them in the spring is the best, because then they have the whole season to regrow roots and get their strength back.
To dive them: Dig up either the whole clump or just part of it. Using 2 shovels/forks back to back gently pry apart the size pieces you want to transplant. Replant in the new area.
I like to dig up the entire plant when transplanting, then take pieces off and replant the rest in the center of the origional hole, otherwise if you just take part of it it is no longer centered in the area.
Just for the record--hostas are very hard to kill, you really cannot hurt them unless you really tear them up when transplanting
