What to buy for a hot/sunny/balcony

: I have a 5x20 foot balcony off of my livingroom. I mention this because the wall is all glass and you see the entire balcony from the main room.  I am in northern Calif., the balcony faces west,in direct sun most all day and gets very warm.

: I want to grow something in a planter on a trelis.  I want something that stays green year round, flowers a good deal of the year, is not messy.  I am considering jasmine or plumbargo.  Am I on the right track or do you have other suggestions?

: Also - I should tell you, I am noooo gardener!  The poor thing needs to be hearty for more than one reason.  
: I have this vision of two retangler planters on either side of my table, with green wrought iron trelis, arching over the table, covered with green climbing plant that flowers, but is not messy and can take the heat.

: Am I crazy or is this possible?
