Hi Kelly,
Many pots also get a build up of minerals and salts. I use a mix of nine parts hot water and one part bleach and scrub with a stiff brush. Be sure and wear old clothes as the bleach will splatter. Then wash with soap and water and rinse well.

This really can't be prevented. It does help to use a natural fertilizer like seaweed or fish emulsion.
