corn plant growth and pruning

I have a corn palm that is 8ft. tall which is now too tall for indoors. Can I prune it somehow? Also, its trunk is very skinny, about a quarter size around. Has a lovely full 'canopy' though. How do I get it to grow 'out' instead of 'up' ?! It also bloomed this winter indoors for the first time and is about 8 yrs. old.
