Hi Christie,
Your corn palm isn't a palm at all but a dracaena. I don't know how to tell you to make the stem thicker, at least that is what I think you're asking. You can cut the stem wherever you like and one or two new shoots will appear just below the cut over time. You could also root the piece you cut off. Here's a site with some helpful info on that. Look here under stem cuttings or air layering for your dracaena.
