I think you have a schefflera. If so, this site should help. http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/HGIC1511.htm Here's one that shows how to prune plants. Scroll down to pruning broadleaf evergreen trees. You won't put it into shock if you don't prune more than 1/3 of your tree.
