Hi Mar Mar,

I think you have a schefflera. If so, this site should help.

Here's one that shows how to prune plants. Scroll down to pruning broadleaf evergreen trees. You won't put it into shock if you don't prune more than 1/3 of your tree. Do keep in mind that if you do prune that much, you can also root prune so that you can keep it in the same pot.
