You've been pinching the leaves. To keep it bushy, you will have to pinch the top. This won't really "hinder" growth, but will encourage side branching. Cut the main stem just above a leaf joint and within a month you'll see new branches developing from the stem. You can eventually pinch those branches if it gets leggy again.
