corn plant

I have a corn plant, i guess that is what it is called. Its about 7foot tall and it looks like corn. i have had since 1988. Its getting to tall and leaning over a little. What i need to know can i cut it off and start another plant or will that kill it.I love that plant, just need to down size it a little or make babies out of part of it. It only has two stalks comming out of the base., but they are full and tall. I look for one day, to come home and i wont be able to get in the door. LOL please someone HELP
