house plants losing leaves

: HELP!  For some reason my houseplants (I have no idea which kind they are) are losing leaves. When I first noticed it, I pulled the bare stems from the soil- but it seems to be getting worse. These plants have been in the same spot for three years and this has never hapened before. Could they be too big for the pots? Why do some of the stems have leaves on the end but none at the top? Should I leave them alone and hope new leaves will grow or does the loss of leaves mean that stem is dead? Please help. Thanks a bunch!
