Here's the version my dad used to sing, at least as I remember it. It was apparently taken from his camp days (Camp Waramug?) in New England, c. 1930's. I now sing it to my newborn daughter, and she is certainly entertained, even if she can't understand the words. ;)
As I was walking down the street one day, a billboard caught my eye,
and the things that you could read on it would make you laugh and cry.
For, the rain and snow came down the night before and washed on half away,
and the other half remaining there, would make that billboard say...oh...
Smoke 'a Coke-a-Cola, tomato ketchup cigarettes,
Watch Lillian Russell wrestle, with a box of Cascarettes,
Heinz Pork-n-Beans will meet tonight in a wrestling finish fight,
And silent Joe will talk about some Holy Oak tonight.
Buy Purina for the horses, just pay 5 dollars down,
Castoria cures the measles, it's the best we have in town,
Teeth extracted without pain, for less than half a dime,
And overcoats are selling out, a little at a time.
