: Bill Grogan's goat was feeling fine,
: Ate 3 red shirts right off the line;
: Bill took a stick, gave him a whack,
: And tied him to the railroad track.
: The whistle blew,
The train grew nigh--
: Bill Grogan's goat was doomed to die;
: He gave a groan of awful pain.
: Coughed up the shirts, and flagged that train.
This was the version I learned in school in 1949. The words and music were printed in the old Silver/Burdette "Merry Music" school songbook series. It was labelled "traditional" even then, so is probably in the public domain. It's highly unlikely that any YMCA or Scout camp could have had a valid copyright on it.
