So happy to see campers gathering to share!
I went to Camp Loowit with my sister in the late 70's. We joke that my dad used to tell us to take pictures of our friends instead of the mountain, "The mountain will always be there!" He still can't live that down!
I still believe that Camp Loowit and the area surrounding Mt. St. Helens was the most beautiful place on earth. So much fun in suc a beautiful place.
We were supposed to attend camp the summer of 1980 as well, but we know the end of that sad tale. I remember watching on the news as they pulled the stingrays, canoes and other boats out of the water when the evacuation of the red zone started. Some of my fondest memories were taking the sailboats out to the middle of the lake and tipping them over - the boy scouts would always come to our rescue!
I remember crying my eyes out the morning of May 18th....
I had heard that there was life returning to the area around the mountain, so my husband and I took a motorcycle trip up to the mountain with friends. I started crying hysterically as we got closer... it was so changed. It was 20 years later and I'm not sure what I was expecting. I guess I wanted to see the trees back, squirrels, deer and the beautiful tall mountain....
My family recently attended a family YMCA camp and I tried singing "There goes ___ swinging on the outhouse door, without a shirt on - pants to match!" But no one understood what I was singing about :P
Well, it's been nice reading about all the other campers - thanks for sharing!
