Caring for Dendrobium Orchids

Hello,
I was given an orchid approx 3 months ago (I believe it's a dendrobium) and so far it seems to be doing OK even though I haven't done anything with it. It's in a southern exp window in a 4" pot & I wonder if I should be fertilizing it or something. I think I've only watered it about 3 times so far! The 4" pot is in a fancier pot & they put some kind of filler in it. Should I remove that? Help!..it's beautiful & I want to make sure I keep it alive.
