i keep killing my orchids! what am i doing wrong?

hi. i have recently become very interested in orchids. At this point, i have had only phals. the problem is that i keep killing them. the minute i get the plant home, within a few days all of the flowers die. This happened with teh first 2. and eventually the whole plant died. Alot was trial and error and i have learned a lot more about taking care of them. By the third plant (the one i have now) i thought i figured it all out but a few days later, the flowers all died--there were about 12 flowers and buds and they all fell off. After it happened i realized that maybe it was from having it on a table near the stove, where it was perhaps too hot? I moved it into the bedroom and the plant has been going strong. Though i thought i would be seeing new blooms by now which i have not. So then i cut above some the nodes and now teh tips of each stem (there are about 4) are turning yellow. HELP! i really want to get into orchids but it doesn't seem i have the green thumb for it.
