: : I have two dendrobium orchids and both have yellow leaves and neither has bloomed since purchase several years ago. I only know the names of these orchids, not the sub-type. One is Emma White and the other is Ching Hwa. Both have southern exposure with a large overhang. I just learned today about withholding water during the summer months. Is overwatering the cause of roots turning brown?

*** Hello,, yes, most likely overwatering is your problem. The roots will turn brown and start to rot. That tends to be the reason why most new orchid owners kill their plants. They really don't require that much water (where do you live?) I live in Orlando FL, and I keep mine outside in the shade. I never water them (except when fertilizing) b/c it rains almost every day, which is okay b/c the sun is so strong it dries them out again. Wait until the potting mixture is DRY before you water them. What type of potting are you using? If it's soil, then that's your problem. Use a chunky bark medium. Hope this helps!
