: If, by "old growth", you are referring to an old flower spike with dead flowers or simply an old spike that held flowers last season, then yes, trim it off. Use clean gardening shears, a clean exacto knife, or clean and sharp scissors. Trim the old spike as close to the base as possible without damaging any leaves or the crown of the plant. But if, by old growth, you are referring to leaves that are green and still beneficial to the plant, then don't prune. Good for you to have kept your gift orchid so healthy! Not everyone is so successful!
