I agree with Gin. I also live in a norther climat (Quebec Canada). We have electric heat and a wood stove. My orchids are in a southern facing room with a ceiling fan. Two windows facing south and one facing ouest. Many of my orchids sit in a tray with pebbles to provide more humidity. The only different thing I do is fertilizee them with 1/4 strength orchid fertilizer every time I water them. The blooms do last longer depending on the genera. I have one that is 3 feet tall and blooms last for up to 6 months. Don't over pot them. They like to be snug in their pots. Good luck, I'm sure you will do well with it. Mikey
