Yellow Leaves on dendrobium orchids

I have two dendrobium orchids and both have yellow leaves and neither has bloomed since purchase several years ago. I only know the names of these orchids, not the sub-type. One is Emma White and the other is Ching Hwa. Both have southern exposure with a large overhang. I just learned today about withholding water during the summer months. Is overwatering the cause of roots turning brown?
