dying orchid, I think

I received this orchid as a gift. Almost immediately the flowers fell of and now the leaves are beginning to turn yellow. It is in a strange sort of pot that is very deep, however when you remove the moss, you find that the plant itself is rooted in a 'collander' type shallow container with some bark.
Is this enough bark for the plant?
What do I do with the moss, if anything?
Why are the leaves yellow?
Should I put the plant outside, I live in New york, I read it should not be in exteme temperatures.
should I mist it?
