Hi Dorothy,
Welcome to the wonderful world of gardening!! The first thing is to pay attention to the soil. Healthy soil will give you healthier plants. The best thing you can do for your soil and your plants, is to add compost. A 2" to 3" layer mixed in would be helpful.

You might also want to contact your local extension service as blackberries won't grow well in some places or only certain varieties will. You'll also need to know your hardiness zone.
