flowers drying up and dying on hydrangeas

For the last several years my front hydrandeas have developed deep purple bulbs. but around this time of the year, the flowers dry up and dye. the leaves get brown at the tips. thiis is a seventeen year old bush but the problem with the flowers has only been occuring the past few years. could it be that they get the afternoon sun from about 2:00 on? Help iit hurts to see them dye.
