Bleeding hearts are one of those plants like hosta, that you can split and replant really any time of the year. If you can wait until spring I think you will have better luck because they will have the entire growing season to recoupe from the shock.

Bleeding hearts prefer shade to part shade, my mom had some in full sun and they grew but only got about 2' tall and did not spread at all
