Most plant data bases do give the common name as well as the botanical. The problem with common names is that there many common names for different plants or the common name can refer to totally different plants.

You can also search at www.google.com putting the name in quotes if there is more than one word. Often you will find more info with the botanical name. You can also click on 'Images' and often get pictures as well.
