Dead Heading Heather

:   We live in zone 5. I have been asked to dead head heather now in early fall. Is this wise? Also, how exactly do I go about doing it ? I was told to grab a handfull and cut off the spent blooms. Is this proper?
:    Also what would be the difference between deadheading and cutting back?
