Growing plants in pots???

: I wanted to start growing plants in my Balcony. I went to Home Depot Nursery & found potted plants. Plants in Home Depot are in plastic pots. So I wanted to know if those plants can grow as such or should I repot them. I am totally new to gardening. If someone could help it would be great.
