Help with tulips!

: I recently received a beatiful potted tulip as a gift.  It has now stopped blooming and the foilage is still healthy.  I would like to keep it, but I don't know if I should plant it now or wait until fall.  If I wait until fall, how do I care for it in the meantime?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
