I live in northern PA and never have trouble with just leaving them out all winter. Our winters go below 0 here, and I never had any trouble. Once you get them started and you get a thick stem started, you should be well on your way to making this vine a perennial. Mine usually comes back at the end of June, but really starts shooting up Mid-July through the first frost Mid-October or so.

Hope this helps you. You can at least experiment. You should have produced many seed pods. Let them dry out and plant them next year if you don't see it coming back.
