dying bonzi tree

my husband is maticulous about watering the bonzi tree just how he read he should. we started to put it outside during the day in average of 70 degree weather. my daughter dumped sand from her sand box on the tree and since then its started to die. i got as much sand off the roots as possible but i didnt think it was that bad for it because the sand stays moist and i thought that is what you wanted for the roots. should we repot it?? how do we go about that?
