sick bonsi tree

I have had a bonsi for 1 yr now. But lately the leaves have become dry and have fallen off. On a number of occations it has had lots of new buds, but they have come to nothing. Please help have i killed it, if so how i haven't done anything diffrent to it. How can i get it back to sprouting lovely green shiny leaves. As only has bark?
Please help.
