Iris seperation

I live in the Seattle area, and was wondering when and how I would go about seperating my iris patch into more iris patches. Is there a certain time of year to do it? How do I seperate them? These are perrenial bulbs, so would I be seperating bulbs or??? Im not sure what type of iris I have but...... Thanks!
