| Familiarly known as the Pinkshell Azalea, R. vaseyi is a tall deciduous azalea native to the mountains of North Carolina. Leaves are elliptic to oblong, shiny and dark green; five-petaled flowers with prominent stamens bloom early, before the leaves emerge, in trusses of 4 to 8. This species does not mind full sun.
The deciduous native azalea, like its hybrid counterpart, is known for excellent fall color and unsurpassed spring flowers. The deciduous azalea is usually less picky about soil, though it too prefers acid conditions. Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions. |
