New foliage emerges vibrant red, turns dark green in summer, and are held late in the season when they turn a brilliant orange to fiery red in fall. One of the best maples for USDA Hardiness zone 8 says Dirr. Smooth light gray bark becomes deeply ridged with age. Showy red flowers precede foliage on intriguing reddish branches. An excellent large lawn tree. Species is native to eastern United States.
