| Fast growing, broadly columnar tree with spiny shoots. Dark green leaves are reduced to a large, single leaflet with up to 2 smaller leaflets, to 4 inches long. Grows 40 to 60 feet tall. White, fragrant flowers, to 3/4 inches long are held in pendant racemes, to 8 inches long. Followed by brown, smooth seed pods, 4 inches long.
With judicious pruning while young, this very common and too often neglected tree, can be quite nice. Though a popular street tree, it really should not be used close to power lines where mature, hard wood has to be pruned. |
