| Abies firma is one of the evergreen Japanese firs, that under ideal conditions may reach 150 feet, but under cultivation, 40 to 50 feet is more usual. The needles are 1 1/2 inches long, broadest at the middle, dark green above, light green below.
Differ from most evergreeen conifers in displaying heat tolerance; they have been cultivated successfully in Mobile, Alabama and Athens,Georgia. They are found in both moist and dry sites in Japan.
The cones are 3 1/2 to 5 inches long, 2 inches wide and dull brown. Introduced in 1861. |
