| This Magnolia is a deciduous, small to medium sized tree or shrub, reaching 50 to 65 feet in height and spread. The leaves are alternate, obovate to obovate-oblong and dark green above, lighter below. The 9 petalled flowers are 5-6" across, white and fragrant, opening before M.x soulangiana. Incredibly beautiful, but because they respond quickly to warm spells, are often damaged by late frosts. Since it is difficult to root from cuttings it is often found in a grafted form. Like other deciduous Magnolias, it is tolerant of cold but does very poorly in a hot, dry or windy environment. Some pollution tolerance. Native to central China, introduced 1789. |
