|The Rutherford Hybrids were developed in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the 1920s as greenhouse forcing plants. Compact, spreading evergreen azalea of medium height. Midday shade is particularly important for this azalea though it is often used in sunnier locations than most azaleas. Hardy to 20 degrees F and best in protected locations. The Rutherfords are mainly pot plants, but can be grown outdoors in warm climates. Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions.
