| Deciduous shrub or medium tree, growing to 20 to 40 feet tall. Bark is grayish-brown, smooth, of medicinal value. Leaves are dark green, elliptical, with conspicuous veins, to 8 inches long and 2 inches across. Yellowish-green, unisexual flowers are borne in axillary clusters. In the fall, bears round, black fruit to 1/2 inches across. Foliage turns a nice yellow. Best adapted to cooler areas with poor soil. Native from British Columbia to Northern California and Montana. |
