| Fast growing, broadly columnar tree with spiny shoots. Grows to 50 feet tall and 25 feet wide. Young shoots are red. Yellowish-green leaves are pinnate to 12 inches long, with up to 23 lance-shaped leaflets. Foliage turns orange to yellow in fall. White, fragrant flowers, to 3/4 inches long are held in pendant racemes, to 8 inches long. Followed by brown, smooth seed pods, 4 inches long.
With judicious pruning while young, this very common and too often neglected tree can be quite nice. Though a popular street tree, it really should not be used close to power lines where mature, hard wood has to be pruned. |
