|Leaves are dark green and glossy, turning a burgundy or purple color in fall. May to June flowers are small and pink. Accepts pruning almost anytime of year. 'Hessel' has pinkish red flowers in May-June with spherical shaped 1/4 inche wide red fruits and 2 to 3 nutlets. This cultivar which has been considered a hybrid between C.horizontalis and C.adpressus var. praecox, is a deciduous irregularly branched shrub with lustrous dark green leaves.
