| A deciduous tree or large shrub, 30-50 feet tall with rough silvery gray bark. Young twigs are yellowish brown, terminal buds are covered with long silvery or yellow hairs. Leaves are willow-like, 2-5 inches long, dark green and smooth, pale green on undersides. Flowers are white, fragrant, 3-4 inches diameter, sometimes with pink at the base. Stamens are cream or white colored. Flowers between March and May, fruits September to October. It is not as showy as some magnolias, but it is hardy. Prefers moist and well drained soils. Native to mountain woodlands at 1650-4400 feet elevation, on Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku islands of Japan. Easily grown from seed, and sets fruit easily. |
