| The Vuyk Hybrid evergreen azaleas were developed in Holland from R. kaempferi and other hybrids and species. A very hardy azalea, R. kaempferi has oblong to ovate leaves one to two inches long and funnel-shaped flowers that usually bloom early to mid season. Foliage in many cases turns reddish in fall or winter.
Plant as you would any of the other azaleas: high and in well-drained, acid soil, rich with organic matter. Though azaleas have a potentially large list of possible pest and disease problems, they are usually trouble free if planted correctly in proper cultural conditions. |
