| This is a vigorous, widely columnar, deciduous tree with brown, cream and gray mottled, flaky bark. Leaves are bright green, 3 to 5 lobed, to 14 inches long. Green, maturing to brown fruit clusters are borne in groups of up to 4. This tree is widely planted in urban settings and is universally admired. It is tolerant to pollution and resistant to parasites. The Platanus genus is susceptible to anthracnose, the cause of early leaf drop. Excellent cultural practices are usually the best prevention: rake up and destroy fallen leaves so that fungus spores have no place to overwinter. |
